Sujet : Females Portrayed in Videogames

Discuss your views and thoughts about how female roles are shown in the gaming world. I'm sure there might be many theories and debates on how each member thinks about a topic like this.

Sometimes I encounter discussions with a friend of mine who discusses about the unnecessary aspects that a lot of female characters are portrayed in games today. He easily gets disgusted about how female characters have to either dress up like "skanks" or need to be half naked, while male characters are fully clothed. I could see his point here because a lot of M-rated games these days are getting worse by showing half or full on nudity. Also, there are chances that kids could get easily exposed to this kind of things, which parents or guardians don't want to see those suggestive themes in a game that their kids are playing. Which I think it is understandable.

Some people may find the way woman and girls are designed or portrayed to be rather sexist or pretty unfair. The "skanky" female character designs in the upcoming Mortal Kombat or Princess Peach getting kidnapped all the time in the Mario games could be some examples of how females get less respect than the males.

Although, there are some moments where females aren't fully portrayed this way. Alyn Vance (Half-Life), Jade (Beyond Good and Evil), Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark), Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) and Samus Aran (Metroid) are are few female characters that are fully independent in the gaming world. These characters are not your stereotypical females in videogames, unless people (mostly men) see Lara Croft or Samus in her Zero Suit outfit as sex objects rather than characters, which I think it is pathetically low.

Well I guess I am done with my rant there. Let me now hear your thoughts about this topic.

i agree with you to the max! it is unfair, which is why the series i right at home has mainly independent non-sexual female characters. I agree with you on EVERYTHING you have said. and perverts in the world are as low as can be and are nothing but completely disgusting. I despise anything that includes stuff that is overly sexual for girls or that "girls arent as good as boys" random $h!* like that. thank you for expressing my growing feelings and hatred for this kind of things. movies and such also make women look stupid! I get better scores than EVERY MALE COMBINED IN MY SCHOOL! and the teachers are literally 98% female, so why do they think that females cant be used as anything than sex objects?!

Because most men care about is money and getting inside a girls pants. Not every men does think about that, but it seems that half of the men population do.

Well to be honest, most of these things in games don't highly offend me that much. When it comes to playing a game, I mostly concentrate on the gameplay rather than what I mostly see on the screen. Any slight nudity or how girls are portrayed in anything other than games doesn't disgust me that easily, but rather shocks me instead. Some of the sex scene gameplay like Grand Theft Auto San Andreas or God of War were optional rather than being part of the main gameplay. So it is your choice whether to "do it" or not. No pun intended.

But, when God of War brought back that kind of gameplay again in God of War 3 and made that part of the main gameplay, I was pretty surprised. Especially when you see Aphrodite's topless servants getting turned on by Kratos and Aphrodite's "love moaning". But that's not all! Once you are finished, Aphrodite's servants just start jumping on each other and make out. This has probably been the first and only time I was slightly disgusted while playing a game.

that disgusts me most. thats why i have no pervert characters in my series. i know its unrealistic, but it takes place in a universe where anything sexual is highly disturbing and disgusting (over the fact that 6 of the 9 kingdoms are ruled by female rulers, JOY.) i find sexual things like that very offensive.

Don't even GET me started, nearly every female i used to meet in Lord of the Rings was a male! i always choose for male , yes, but i also find it disrespectfull that most game companies try to make all the female characters look like total .. well you know im not gonna say it

Like others, I would have to agree. Women in video games (or even worse- movies and television shows) have to be used as "babes" and "chick magnets" my least favorite terms. I find it sickening that video game artists come up with perverted concepts and to say the least it sickens me to know that today in this world people are using women as a form of pleasure among themselves. How can people allow these things to continue to go on? Obviously, females are almost never portrayed as main characters or something other than "skanks". Blame this on perverted jerks.

Or even the fan-base. They can be even worse with all the slash fan-art they do.

As for females portrayed as "babes", I think as long as the characters themselves are seductive in nature, then that is probably the only time I would accept fictional females like these. Bayonetta would probably be one example of a character I might accept her seductive behaviour. Sure, she maybe a witch with an outfit made out of her hair and can be half naked sometimes, but at least she is independent and doesn't take no hoot from nobody.

I'm surprised nobody here mentioned any of the female characters from the Final Fantasy franchise. Some of the girls that are dressed in those games can be pretty revealing like the character Tifa in FF7 or the three main protagonists in Final Fantasy X-2.

How did Yuna and Rikku ever became from this…

You have a point there, Tipsy. It's true for alot of games. Even Ratchet and Clank; the female characters are not as important as the males and most are mostly just put there for a relastionship or for the males to be attracted to them. So, if anyone says "This doesn't accour in Ratchet and Clank", your wrong. Honestly, though, your all overreacting over this a little bit. It's not all in all "horrible" for a female character to be suductive in a video game, just as long as there are more to them than just sexual purposes. Everyone in a video game, except for little baby games, is a tiny bit perverted, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, as I said just as long as they have a role more than that.

Well there will always be perverted things in a lot of media content, which we cannot do anything about that except to ignore it (although, it would be hard for some people). Some of it can be subtle, which it is fine, but the obvious suggestive themes could be a hit or miss depending how it is presented.

I think some members are ticked off by the fact that some females are less respected than the males are in videogames. Not only how females are exposed in the outfits they wear or when it comes to nudity in an M-rated game, but also being the "damsels in distresses" in the story plot.

I'm sure some of you would question about how characters like Angela Cross and Talwyn Apogee would have such active personalities with guns or other gadgets and gizmos they hold on to, but somehow they would get kidnapped in a later segments in the Ratchet and Clank games. The "damsel in distress" scenarios in E-rated content don't really bug me that much, but I do question about it sometimes like "how did they get kidnapped so quickly?" or "why they couldn't use their weapon while being locked in prison?"

yeah about that reminds me of how my older brother would adjust the angles and zoom to view Lora Croft or Make he freak at that old guy who would follow her around in her mansion.

But Skanky Portrayal can Be a two-way street on some Occasions. I mean look at how Ratchet used to dress and Sonic was Naked much to the glee of many furries emoji .

But Ratchet and Sonic are male characters first of all. And second, they are mascot like characters. It is fine for those male characters to be designed that way due to the art style of the game. It's like how Donald Duck wears no pants in the Disney cartoon shorts. What you've mentioned here is quite different to what we are talking about.

Maybe mentioning female anthropomorphic characters in games could have been better examples of how they are exposed in games compared to the male characters. Krystal from the Star Fox franchise is one example that reveals a lot of fur in her outfit, which cause a lot of furry fan bait while her design is being viewed. Carmelita Fox from Sly Cooper could be another example, but more on the fan-base point of view with a bit of inappropriate fan-work. At least Carmelita herself is quite bad a** in the games, despite the fact that she does get kidnapped a couple of times and become quite gullible in some segments.

If you think the characters from Final Fantasy X-2 were bad, then you would hate the Dead or Alive series even more. Girls in bikinis playing beach games in inappropriate angles is certainly a game of a man's dream fantasy. In other words, a really pointless game franchise to play.

But then again, anything from Japan is provided with a lot of perverted content.

Male or female characters. It doesn't matter for me.
