Sometimes I encounter discussions with a friend of mine who discusses about the unnecessary aspects that a lot of female characters are portrayed in games today. He easily gets disgusted about how female characters have to either dress up like "skanks" or need to be half naked, while male characters are fully clothed. I could see his point here because a lot of M-rated games these days are getting worse by showing half or full on nudity. Also, there are chances that kids could get easily exposed to this kind of things, which parents or guardians don't want to see those suggestive themes in a game that their kids are playing. Which I think it is understandable.
Some people may find the way woman and girls are designed or portrayed to be rather sexist or pretty unfair. The "skanky" female character designs in the upcoming Mortal Kombat or Princess Peach getting kidnapped all the time in the Mario games could be some examples of how females get less respect than the males.
Although, there are some moments where females aren't fully portrayed this way. Alyn Vance (Half-Life), Jade (Beyond Good and Evil), Joanna Dark (Perfect Dark), Lara Croft (Tomb Raider) and Samus Aran (Metroid) are are few female characters that are fully independent in the gaming world. These characters are not your stereotypical females in videogames, unless people (mostly men) see Lara Croft or Samus in her Zero Suit outfit as sex objects rather than characters, which I think it is pathetically low.
Well I guess I am done with my rant there. Let me now hear your thoughts about this topic.
