Today, it'syourbreak.com interviewed the one and only James Arnold Taylor regarding the Ratchet and Clank Movie, how it all began, and what to know when becoming a voice actor.
Having recently watched the official movie trailer, James was a bit upset that he and David Kaye were only mentioned in two seconds at the end of the trailer, whereas people like Paul Giamatti and Rosario Dawson were listed as the "A-list cast." Speaking of Paul Giamatti, James was asked whether or not Kevin Michael Richardson wanted to voice Chairman Drek again. No surprise, he did, and was not too happy about getting replaced. James almost wanted to do a jedi-mind trick on the directors to get KMR the role again.
This will be James Arnold Taylor's third feature film, the first being TMNT 2007, the second being Star Wars the Clone Wars. The Clone Wars series also gave David Kaye and KMR minor roles too. JAT is the main character for all three feature films, as well as his 4th one, "Animal Crackers." He said Sly Stallone will be in that movie, as well as the Ratchet and Clank Movie.
JAT says this movie is a buddy movie: Ratchet is a lombax who really wants to make a difference and be a hero. Clank is a brilliant “do-gooder” robot who can pretty much calculate anything; in short, he's a "logical guy." Qwark is a Galactic Ranger who apparently saved the world back in the day. But in the end, he's a numbskull.
Perhaps the strangest part of the interview was when JAT was asked when he met David Kaye. He replied: "We actually met for the first time about 4 years ago, shortly after A Crack in Time." He says that they are very good friends. "Met," being a relative term, probably refers to "outside the studio." James said that he usually records his lines in a booth by himself, but in the case of the movie, he worked with David Kaye and Jim Ward in the same booth.
James Arnold Taylor has played all of the Ratchet and Clank games by Insomniac Games, though he tries not to get addicted to it. When David Kaye played his first Ratchet and Clank title, he instantly got hooked until the very last boss. When he beat Drek, he said "I did it, I did it!"
Aside from Ratchet and Clank, James Arnold Taylor also gave some good advice on how to be a great voice actor. He even revealed the shocking truth that he wears a retainer! Not during voice acting gigs, of course, but at night. He joked: "Aside from voice acting and cooking, I'm not that good at much else!"
In the end, James Arnold Taylor tells us all how God changed his life, citing a bible verse from 1 Corinthians 13:13 "And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love." He hopes many people come to know Him, and he hopes the Ratchet and Clank Movie becomes a success. Thanks for being an inspiration to us all, James Arnold Taylor!
