I wouldn't like to be a mod - I mean, jumping in a thread and mercilessly closing it. I clearly understand the reason for it, but I just couldn't have the heart for that

Maybe. Here in New Zealand we would never get a croud of people going crazy for anything in a store. One of the wonders of the internet: Being able to witness disorder in a shop!
