Heh not bad work there, the design for the outfit works pretty well too as one of the Lombax soldiers during those days. Good work I think you only need to learn how to shade, when you feel the time is right
I took you advide an learned how to shade using the Burn and Dodge tool in Adobe Photoshop CS4

once you start to shade your pics more, you'll start to get the hang of it and be able to shade them 'realistically' (when I shade, I try to imagine as if they're 3D, so I know where the lighting and shadows should be) it took me a lot of time to get good with that. Then once you're used to it, you can try fur-shading =D 

) but it is neat once you can evolve your style into something unique and different, though at the same time it is very hard to get a 'unique' style with so many about these days… I have no idea what my style would be classified as XD
