You can dislike the Sly 2/3 ingame design, but you gotta admit - it's at least 10 times better than this:

Honestly, I don't think his movie design is all that bad…

I just don't feel good about movie's artstyle in general - it's way too realistic for a story about a gang of anthropomorfic animal thieves, based on a franchise that was inspired by comic books and old school hand drawn cartoons. But well, nobody can make a solid 2D animation these days (excluding Disney, though these guys are doing it occasionally), even the Popeye movie is going to be CG.

I think that art style would look LOVELY in a Jak and Daxter movie, but in a Sly movie it's really mediocre.

Its just a non-canon movie, so don't worry about the fact you'll see the design in future games. Though I find the design looks really cool too. Gives you what 'what if Sly were real' impression.

2D movies are slowly driven out of the picture. Most of them are low budget kids movies with just a DVD release. I walked by the 'children's movies' department yesterday to see if they had 3D Frozen yet and saw a whole bunch of 2D movies from last year I had never heard of before. They're a dying race.

I said 'solid 2D animation' Heather. Besides, I don't get your point of 'it being not cannon' (TiT is, so you can't fix the original Sly universe anymore emoji ). Ok, you say I won't see them like this in any game - but it doesn't change the fact that I'll see these designs in a movie! In a freakin Sly movie that finally comes out after 14 years! I don't really feel these movies are 'less important' - don't forget they'll have the biggest audience, they will take the lead, become the franchise's main medium. They'll have their own cannon that will probably cause creators to leave the original stories. If Ratchet and Sly movies are succesfull that is.

The movie is probably a reboot like the R&C and Heavenly Sword ones, and therefore save a presume they will be non-canon.

The best game movies are imo the ones that actually are canon to the games. I find that Mass Effect: Paragon Lost is a great example. Its a standalone story of which people in the game talk about sometimes. The main potagonist also got an important role in the last game. While the movie itself takes place during the second instalment. You don't need to see it to understand what's going on in the games, but the games are way cooler when you have read the comics, novels and seen the movie. But… this movie wasn't a big deal. It got an obscure DVD/BluRay release, not theatrical. Though its still implanted into the games, but adopted their style and vision for they are the superior part.

Now Ratchet, Sly and Heavenly Sword are a little bit of an unique case here. They’re CG movies… and not the small kind. Especially Ratchet and Sly should become an important launch as both a movie and the animation genre. If the movies will be ‘big’, I don’t know. Just like book-to-movies and tvshow-to-movies they have something to live up to and most of the time people aren’t easily pleased. So honestly, I think you don’t have to worry they are going to build upon the success of the movies. Cause like ME, the games are supirior and more important to fans.

Most of them are low budget kids movies with just a DVD release.

I'm sorry, but how can 80 minutes of hand drawn pictures be low budget? This is what society thinks 2D movies are and many people think they're dying because of it, but in reality the only reason there have been less and less 2D movies is because companies just don't want to put the time and money into them.

You know those bins in toy stores with DVD's for €/$1 a piece? Thats were you find mediocre 2D movies made by small companies.. mostly interns probably. Which means free licences and a few free employees. Just like the gaming buisness you have those kinds of companies. So there, a not too expensive 2D movie for kids. Doesn't take away the fact its still a lot of work. But its not as classy as high budget movies like Disney makes, which you can see very clearly.

Back to the intended topic though, I don't mind the art-style that much, but would it really hurt to put a bit of colour in the designs?
I know Sly is supposed to be sneaky and dark clothes help him with that, but in the games he always has vibrant blue clothes with yellow accessories.
In the movie he has washed out blue and grey clothes and a yellow scarf and it's kinda boring.

Wait, how did Bentley become a professional van driver? *sigh* Sly 2 *sigh* Jailbreak episode

But this is supposed to be Sly 1 (which explain Murray's obsession with food).

Again, the movie's supposed to be Sly 1.

His point is that it happens before he learns it. Aka he hasn't learned it yet. But thats small details for ya.
