Well, that's the movie's message - we do need all of the emotions, including sadness in our life. Sometimes we do need to be sad, sometimes we do need to be angry and so forth. Our psyche couldn't work properly if we were just joyfull all the time. Joy alone doesn't equal true happiness. That's a really unique message not just for an animated movie, but for any movie, which makes me appreciate it even more.
