I read my first Disney Canon novel: Before the Awakening. Which has 3 short stories about FN-2187, Rey and Poe.
So mainly I read it because I knew Phasma was a character in it. Turns out she ís pretty cool. She's incredibly intimidating as you never know who exactly she's looking at. She never quite turns her head directly at someone. Again, a cool characteristic. She knows each and every Stormtrooper by number (yes, all fifty billion thousand of them) and she is loyal to none other than the supreme leader. So not Ren or Hux, respectively.
Phasma aside, only Rey's story was quite unique. Nothing special with the others.
