Thread: Ratchet's Personality

Well, in that case:

I totally bias for Ratchet from the four PS2 games. He was more charismatic, more funny. That's what I liked about him. So, the fact he's become more mature on the PS3 games has really let me down. emoji It's not the real Ratchet to my view.
The new Ratchet's personnality is too cliché.

Flawless characters are concidered stereotype.

I can't stand flawless characters, they're annoying. I don't think Ratchet will be written that way.

I will: Clank used to be full of emotion in the ps2 games: he would have the best expressions, adorable voicing (like saying "what?!?"emoji and more sarcasm than any of the ps3 games.

Now he's just an emotionless robot who adds his two scents every 10 minutes. TJ fixman doesn't seem to care about his character as much from what we've seen, and that worries me more than Ratchet's personality.

Never played the Future series so I can't make any judgments on Clanks character here. In the PS2 games, Clank was intelligent, yet naive. In many ways he was the opposite of Ratchet. I hope we get something like this in the re-imagining.

Ratchet's transformation from the first game to the second one wasn't actually as bad (or good depending on what character you prefer) as some people are making it out to be.
Yeah, he didn't yell at Clank anymore, but he still retained some of his flaws from the first game. He's still really clumsy, dumb and full of himself.
Heck, in Deadlocked he mutes his mic when talking to Sasha just so he can come up with something clever to say and when they're captured, Ratchet's thinking about how much money he can make. That's just something the "I've always wanted to help old ladies cross the street" Ratchet from the movie wouldn't do, he'd probably say "We've got to get out of here before we get killed!"
And granted, Deadlocked Ratchet does say something along those lines, but it's closer to the end of the game when things are actually heating up and Big Al's kinda… well, dead.

I think you got it spot on, Ratchet's development makes sense for each game. His personality wasn't drastically different in Going Commando.

…and then there's the Ps4 game, aka "Qwark: The Video game."

From what I've seen, it doesn't look like Quark will dominate this game.

We already got one, it's also known as "Full Frontal Assault". This time it seems more like "Ratchet and a bunch of other aliens", kinda like ItN.

FFA didn't feel like a Ratchet dominated game to me.

i kinda like the idea of quark narrating because he was the villain and he litteraly just wants to credit himself, thats definetly the old quark hs less sly on the new games aka nexus, he doesnt brag about much on nexus

He is funny, but the game seems a bit dialogue heavy. The PS2 games knew when to shut up.

Looks like many would agree with you, I need to play the future series myself.

Is if haven't played the future games, how would you know Ratchet's personality?

lets just say, DO NOT PLAY THE FUTURE GAMES. sure their good but it doesent really fit in with the original ps2 series.

Unfortunately, we'll probably never see again the old Ratchet's personality. This one was forsaking when TOD was released in 2007. To me it's logical to see a new Ratchet's personality inasmuch as he grew up. That's why he has became more mature and classical, he is no longer the anti-hero as before. I understand your nostalgia about this old personality. There was a time when I loved his offhandedness and his impulsiveness, but I research now a new behavior, a novelty.

Personally, Jak was my favorite hero during the PS2 era thanks to his agressive personality, rather like Ratchet when he was a teenager. emoji

I actually agree with everyone who says Future Ratchet is okay. It makes sense for him to grow up, become more mature, and be a better person- if he were still a sarcastic little jerk when he was 21 or whatever age he's supposed to be in the Future series, no one would have any reason to like him. I also happen to think his character evolution was decent, since he doesn't just leap from anti-hero to hero but instead evolves into it over multiple plotlines.

But that has nothing to do with Ratchet in the movie or the PS4 release. That brings the timeline back to Ratchet when he *was* an immature teenager- making him a real hero back then eliminates the biggest thing that made R&C's plot worth paying attention to. It also drastically lessens the importance of Clank.

The real hook to the R&C storyline, before Ratchet evolves and grows up, was Ratchet's relationship with Clank. The reason that relationship began was pure chance, and it continued the way it did because Clank both needed Ratchet and saw something in him that was better than the person he was at the time.

Clank is the real hero in the first R&C, and it's Clank who the player is rooting for; but Clank is weak and naive, so he needs help from someone who is fairly unappealing at first. But you keep watching, because Clank is the hero. As time goes on, Ratchet shows he's got good in him too, until the end when he does something legitimately heroic, against his own self-interest. That's the moment when the audience starts to like Ratchet. Before then he's just a jerk, but a jerk who happens to be necessary for the hero (Clank) to do what he has to do. And cracks amusing jokes.

That's a way more complex plot than most videogames then (and even now) usually dealt with. That plus the humor, parody and excellent writing made R&C worthwhile, and worth continuing.

If they retcon all of that and make Ratchet a perfect little angel, they will lose all their substance just to gain a few of the dumbest audience members who can't understand any plot that can't be summarized in one line. Same with introducing Cora as a serious romantic interest, if they choose to do that.

I'm a writer. I may not be the best in the world, but I know enough to know the kind of cheap commercialism that motivates plot changes of this kind. Removing those salient details generalizes the plot and makes it easier to understand. It's a technique used by untalented hacks who write the most generic stories possible to "appeal to broad audiences". It's writing via focus group and market research. And I think it could ruin my favorite game-based storyline.

Ideally, Ratchet will be a little selfish, crack plenty of jokes at other's expense, and not take things seriously for the first half of the film/game, not be a goody-two-shoes. Hopefully he'll be motivated towards joining the Galactic Rangers or whatever it's called because he wants to be famous, not because he's Mother Teresa. Hopefully the Cora character will be someone Ratchet can flirt with and make amusing jokes about, not a replacement for Talwyn. And for the love of all that is good and holy, let Clank be the good guy and not a silent R2D2.

FFA didn't feel like a Ratchet dominated game to me.

Um… That's the point. I meant that it's Qwark dominated. Heck, you can count all Clank's cutscene lines in that game with one hand!

From what I've seen, it doesn't look like Quark will dominate this game.

Okay, whenever someone makes that mistake I have to point it out:

Qwark

Funny thing is, Quark and Nefarious is the same actor emoji

And straightcutgears… Exactly. I really don't know what to add that would not be a repetition.

I'm not basing my opinion on the future series, just my observations from the trailer and gameplay for the new game. I haven't made any conclusions yet either.

It's bad enough I don't like TJ fixman as a person, now we're worried he's gonna ruin (even more) the series for us.
At least he's retired now; we can get Brain Allgier to write the script for the next one or something.

Huh?
Why don't you like TJ?

You don't like him as a person, though? What'd he do?

Well, he's got bad political views and a very bad mouth (at least from what I can tell from his twitter feed). If you want to be hired, you should keep your twitter feed nice and clean and positive, like JAT.

Uh, are you being sarcastic?

It's…complicated. I mean, it's nice that he's the script writer for Ratchet and Clank, but he doesn't seem like the kinda guy you'd want to have a conversation with (aside from Ratchet and Clank related stuff, of course).
