Thread: Sly Cooper Thread

These guys are good animators technically, but they just can't keep originals charm and cartoonism - I'm talking about both Sly and Ratchet movies. It also annoys me, since these characters have SO MUCH POTENTIAL to be animated movie stars… but a bad design can ruin it when it comes to animation.

I was just quoting the teaser trailer, but I didn't know that emoji Thought it was FFA.

This movie can still be saved - by Peter McConnell. Just like TiT emoji

Maybe, I really like TiT's… soundtrack.

I was hoping for a hand-drawn Sly movie

THIS! Sly's movie SHOULD be hand-drawn, his whole gimmick is that it's a playable comic, that's why the characters have outlines and there are those "QUEEE"s and "POOF"s when you defeat enemies. Take away that and it looses it's charm.

Exactly. It all makes me wonder how are they going tohandle Jak..

I struggle to think of how Daxter will look like… ugh…

Dom't even tell me that is planned.

Film Financial Services leaked all three movies back in 2012. And it's logo appeared on Ratchet and Sly movie pages…

Because I never got into Sly I don't have to worry about this movie. Although I do see how it could be upsetting that the design choices are not properly honoring the game.

Maybe someday I'll care more about Sly Cooper, but until that day this movie fails to upset me.

A Jak movie on the other hand… will be very hard to pull off. Naughty Dog probably won't provide as much help as Insomniac are with the Ratchet Movie, and the story for the first game was so light and happy that the second and third will just be way too hard to pull off if they ever want to. They'd either have to CHANGE Jak II, or be prepared to shock all of the people who watched the first.

The biggest problem with Jak and Daxter is the first 3 games are as much of a trlogy as the Future saga for Ratchet & Clank, you can't just leave out Jak II and Jak 3.

EDIT: Here is more info: http://www.ign.com/articles/2014/01/28/sly-cooper-movie-announced

I sort of guessed that that is why they didn't go with the cartoony cell-shaded look.

"Going this path was a bold leap, but one we felt was appropriate for the theatrical process. The global film market leans towards pure CG-animated films. As much as we all loved the cel-shaded look of the game, we collectively felt it would not hold up on the big screen. Though we believe we managed to keep a lot of the feel of the game even in the film. Thankfully, Sony and Sucker Punch were supportive and agreed"
To put it simply: They don't want to waste the time and money to actually draw and want to target towards casuals since everyone seems to think that 2D animation is for kids, so they get more money.
It's all about the $$$ and it's fitting cause it's Sly.

Well the little kiddies I see running around do seem to prefer those flashy CG-films. I can't really think of a big modern movie (apart from The Simpsons) that is done with that 2D look. Infact wouldn't it be easier to have chosen the 2D hand-drawn path?

No, in order to make good 2D animation you have to draw each frame individually (that's 30-60 pics per second BTW). Unless they went with the very cheap Sly and Infamous animation.

I thought a lot of 2D work was enhanced by computers these days?

But I could be completely wrong. I never really looked into how they make 2D animations in modern times.

That's pretty much what Sly and Infamous did, but an hour and a half of that animation get really old really fast.

well I played inFamous a few times, but the animation for cutscenes… well there wasn't any. They made a pretty little picture and just moved parts of it, like when Cole slides across the floor its the exact same picture from start to finish, or when leaping in the air too.

Meanwhile I'm pretty sure you get something like Futurama which while at it's core the characters are all drawn, you get special effects and smooth spaceship animations and such which are all CGI. So I don't think that Sly couldn't have been made mainly with CGI while still retaining it's traditional art style.

So it idd wasn't Kevin Miller? I thought it was just the high-def sound giving him a little more of a bass.

His voice is alike though. Like Ali Hillis replacing Tara Strong in Nexus.

Not all 2D animation is completely hand drawn, and the ones that are computer enhanced can still be animated properly…
For example, the current generation of "My Little Pony" is animated in Flash; sure, they still have to draw the initial sprites, but once they've got the various sprites, they can fully animate the characters relatively easily. And for that matter, it's not even like they have to draw the entire characters' sprites for each frame, they have a pool of sprites for character's mouths, a pool of sprites for character's eyes etc. so they can mix and match things to get whatever facial expression/pose/whatever they need to without having to do any extra drawings…
The point is, by using a technique like this, they could easily make a high-quality Sly film that's in the original art style, and like they said, they're not making it 3D because it's "easier" they're making it 3D because it's apparently more popular…
